St Mary the Virgin's Church, Wiggenhall

St Mary the Virgin's Church is a Grade I listed building in Wiggenhall St Germans featuring a solid west tower with three tiers, buttresses, and tall clerestory windows. The structure displays Perpendicular Gothic design typical of English parish churches from the medieval period.

The church began around 1250 as a place of worship for the local community and developed over centuries. In 1862, architect George Edmund Street led restoration work that carefully preserved its medieval character while updating the structure.

The wooden benches inside show carved figures of saints and holy people from medieval times. These seats tell stories of faith through their detailed craftwork and images.

The church is currently not open to regular visitors due to safety concerns related to bat populations inside the building. You should check ahead before planning a visit, as access is restricted to protect both the bats and the structure.

A brass memorial inside honors Sir Robert Kervile, whose heart was brought back from abroad after his death and buried within the church. This unusual burial choice shows the special connection this family had to the place.
