St Mary's Church, Nottingham, Medieval church in Lace Market district, Nottingham, England
St Mary's Church is a medieval church in the Lace Market district featuring characteristic perpendicular Gothic architecture from the late medieval period. The interior displays large windows, numerous monuments, and ten gilded angels positioned throughout the spacious hall.
The current building was constructed between 1377 and 1485, making it the third church structure to stand on this site. The location itself dates back to medieval times, with records of an earlier sanctuary appearing in the Domesday Book of 1086.
The church functions as Nottingham's Civic Church and holds a close relationship with the University of Nottingham. You'll notice it serves as a gathering place for formal city events and academic ceremonies throughout the year.
The church is open on weekdays with accessible entrances for visitors with mobility needs and facilities including a café and shop. Plan to allow time to look around the interior properly, as the space rewards careful exploration.
Inside you'll find an octagonal medieval baptismal font carved with Greek palindrome inscriptions that read the same forwards and backwards. Bronze doors added in 1904 depict New Testament scenes in fine detail.
