חאן שער הגיא, Ottoman caravanserai in Sha'ar HaGai, Israel
Khan Sha'ar HaGai is a former caravanserai situated in a narrow mountain passage that connects the coastal plain to Jerusalem through rocky terrain. The building retains the traditional layout of a way station with a central courtyard and surrounding rooms for travelers and goods.
During the Ottoman period, this caravanserai was a vital stop on the ancient trade route between the coast and Jerusalem. In the 20th century, the site became significant again as fighting broke out over control of the road during the 1948 conflict.
The site now houses a heritage center with multimedia displays about the 1948 battles for control of the Jerusalem road. Visitors can see how this location was central to the conflict during that period.
Tours of the site run on a regular schedule and last about 45 minutes with audiovisual presentations included. It helps to arrive early to get oriented and see the outdoor areas before heading inside.
The grounds display authentic vehicles from 1948, including an armored bus and supply truck that were used during the siege of Jerusalem. These vehicles stand as reminders of how ordinary transport played a role in survival during that difficult time.
