Baderiana

Baderiana is an archaeological site in Petrovec Municipality containing structures from the 4th century. Visible are foundation remains of ancient buildings and defensive walls that show how an earlier settlement was organized.

The location is mentioned in writings by Byzantine historian Procopius as the birthplace of Emperor Justinian I, who ruled from 482 to 565. An earthquake in 518 caused severe damage and prompted Justinian I to launch reconstruction efforts across the region.

The site displays Roman building elements that later influenced Byzantine construction traditions, visible in the exposed structures. Visitors can see these ancient methods directly in the preserved foundations and walls.

Wear sturdy footwear as the paths to the site are unpaved and uneven. A short walk from the nearest parking area will bring you to the archaeological remains.

The 518 earthquake left clear traces in the ruins that are still visible in the damaged and rebuilt wall sections today. These physical marks show how people of that time dealt with the natural disaster.
