Businessman Frederic Croft purchased the land in the 1890s and commissioned architect Haldor Børve to design the main building, which took 25 workers over two years to construct.

Current regulations designate sections of the property for public use, nature conservation, and outdoor recreation, with specific protections for building exteriors.
