Hang Thong Tang To Kang, Historical gold shop in Yaowarat, Thailand
Tang Toh Kang is a historic gold shop in Yaowarat built over seven floors in a structure designed by a Dutch architect. The building features uncommon elements with narrow facades and tall interior spaces that differ from most structures in the surrounding neighborhood.
This shop was established over 140 years ago during King Chulalongkorn's reign and became the primary supplier for numerous gold shops throughout Thailand. Its founding coincided with Bangkok's modernization period when many Chinese merchants settled in this district.
The name reflects its Chinese merchant origins in Thailand's gold trading quarter. The shop became a gathering place where craftspeople and buyers followed customs shaped by both Chinese and Thai business traditions.
The shop is located on Soi Wanit 1 and the museum section welcomes visitors Monday through Saturday with advance notice preferred. The area is easy to reach by public transportation and the neighborhood has many small shops and food vendors nearby to explore while visiting.
The sixth floor displays historical artifacts including acid jars made in Ratchaburi, antique wooden scales, and an original Garuda emblem from early operations. This collection shows the everyday tools and equipment that craftspeople depended on before modern manufacturing techniques arrived.
