The Soldiers' Monument, Civil War memorial sculpture in Freeport, Illinois.
The marble monument rises 83 feet high with four 7-foot statues at its corners representing Infantry, Cavalry, Artillery, and Navy branches.
General Smith D. Atkins designed this memorial structure in 1871 to commemorate Stephenson County soldiers who died during the Civil War.
Bronze plaques installed in 1924 at the base display names of all county veterans who served during the American Civil War.
The monument stands at the northern intersection of Galena Avenue and Stephenson Street, offering a central point for memorial ceremonies.
A lightning strike in 1960 destroyed the original Victory statue, which was replaced in 2015 after extensive community fundraising efforts.
