Margarinefabrikken Alfa, Industrial building in Vejen Municipality, Denmark.
Margarinefabrikken Alfa is a former factory building in Vejen Municipality with red brick walls, rounded arched windows, and vertical pilasters dating from the late 1800s. The structure features multiple wings arranged around a central complex typical of Danish industrial design from that era.
Johannes Lauridsen founded the margarine production facility in 1898, introducing industrial food manufacturing to the region. The works operated for nearly a century until production ceased in 1992.
The factory published a cookbook in 1937 featuring recipes for confectionery and fruit preservation instructions that shaped Danish cooking practices. This publication showed how the company extended its influence beyond manufacturing into people's everyday kitchens and tables.
The building sits south of Vejen station and can be located at coordinates 55.4758°N and 9.1343°E in the town center area. It remains visible from the street and serves as a local landmark for orientation.
During World War II, the factory switched from making margarine to producing marmalade, mustard, ketchup, and preserves due to raw material shortages. This shift reflected the difficult supply conditions that affected many industries in occupied Denmark.
