Pavement, Medieval street in York, England

Pavement extends through the center of York with Tudor buildings and historic churches standing along its stone-paved length.

First recorded as Marketshire in 1086, the street received its current name in 1329 when it became the first paved road in York.

The street houses All Saints Church, featuring a lantern tower that guided travelers through the Forest of Galtres in medieval times.

Located between Parliament Street and Stonebow, Pavement connects to The Shambles and contains multiple retail establishments in preserved buildings.

Thomas Percy, Earl of Northumberland, met his end through execution on this street in 1572, marked today by a commemorative plaque.
