St Piran’s Oratory, Medieval religious site in Penhale Sands, Cornwall, United Kingdom

The stone oratory consists of a simple rectangular structure measuring 30 feet in length with a nave and chancel near the Cornish coast.

Established in the 6th century by Saint Piran, an Irish missionary, the oratory remained active until sand accumulation forced its abandonment in the 10th century.

The site contains archaeological evidence of ancient burial practices, including stone cists and skeletal remains discovered during excavation work in 1980.

The oratory remains locked except during special events, but visitors can view the roofless interior from surrounding banks and read information panels.

Excavation efforts in 1835 revealed a headless skeleton at the altar, believed to be Saint Piran, along with three carved Celtic stone heads.
