Kamanos State Strict Nature Reserve, Protected natural area in Akmenė District Municipality, Lithuania
Kamanos State Strict Nature Reserve is a protected wetland area in Akmenė District, northern Lithuania, covering a large raised bog, mixed forests, and many small lakes. It is one of the most intact bog systems in the Baltic region and supports rare plant and animal species adapted to wet, nutrient-poor conditions.
The bog began forming after the last ice age ended, around 11,000 years ago, when meltwater filled shallow depressions and created wet, nutrient-poor conditions. The area was declared a strict nature reserve in 1979 to protect its natural processes from human interference.
The name Kamanos comes from a nearby village and refers to the bog that has shaped this corner of northern Lithuania for generations. Walkers who reach the edge of the reserve can see how the wetland has defined the surrounding landscape and kept it apart from the farmland nearby.
Visiting requires advance permission from the managing authority, as the reserve is strictly protected and not freely open to the public. Sturdy waterproof footwear is strongly recommended, since the ground along marked paths can be very wet and uneven.
The peat in some parts of the reserve reaches depths of over 7 meters, built up layer by layer over thousands of years without interruption. Some of the open water patches in the middle of the bog sit on ground so unstable that the surface shakes underfoot when you walk nearby.
