Šeimyniškiai outcrop, Geological outcrop in northern Lithuania
Šeimyniškiai outcrop is a rock exposure in northern Lithuania that displays multiple layers of conglomerate and other sedimentary rocks stacked one above another. The visible strata consist of differently colored materials, including limestone, dolomite, and sandstone, arranged in a distinct pattern.
The layers formed during the Early Toarcian period roughly 183 million years ago when various sediments accumulated at this location. These deposits became compacted and hardened over long periods into the rock formations visible today.
Scientists from Lithuanian universities regularly conduct field studies at this location to educate geology students about regional rock formations.
The location is accessible via marked paths that allow visitors to examine the different rock layers up close. Sturdy footwear is recommended as the ground can be uneven and the paths depend on weather conditions.
The sediment layers contain fossilized spores and plant remains that provide clues to ancient delta and coastal lake environments. These discoveries allow scientists to reconstruct environmental conditions from millions of years ago.
