Viken County Municipality, County administrative division in southeastern Norway
Viken County Municipality is a regional administrative body in southeastern Norway responsible for upper secondary schools, regional roads, public transportation, and dental health services. It oversees these functions across a large territory encompassing multiple communities and areas.
The county municipality came into being on January 1, 2020, through the merger of Akershus, Buskerud, and Østfold counties along with three additional municipalities into a single entity. This consolidation created a larger regional structure for more efficient administration and resource management.
The county council functions as a regional parliament with 87 representatives from various political parties, including Labour Party and Conservative Party with 22 seats each.
Public transportation is operated by three companies serving the region: Brakar, Østfold Kollektivtrafikk, and Ruter, with Ruter being partly managed by Oslo. The administrative center is located in Oslo, even though the county covers a much larger territory beyond the city.
Despite governing a population of 1.2 million residents, the administrative center of Viken County Municipality operates from outside its territory, in Oslo.
