Escalier Montmorency, Monumental stairs in Le Havre, France

The Montmorency Stairs extend 150 meters in length with a 50-meter elevation change, featuring 300 steps that are 90 centimeters wide and 84 centimeters deep.

Inaugurated in May 1928, the Montmorency mechanical stairs served as one of only two escalator systems worldwide and remained operational until a mechanical failure in September 1984.

In 2018, artist Miguel Do Amaral Coutinho collaborated with 500 local residents to paint 2665 rectangular cases on the stairs using 75 liters of paint in 15 pastel shades.

The stairs connect the upper and lower parts of Le Havre, providing a direct path for pedestrians, cyclists, and people with strollers to navigate the city's elevation differences.

The mechanical system of these stairs received historical monument status on June 8, 1984, preserving its engineering legacy within French architectural heritage.
