Wirtshaus am See, Lake-view restaurant in Bregenz, Austria.
Wirtshaus am See is a restaurant in Bregenz sitting directly on the shore of Lake Constance, housed in a timber-framed building with steep gables and a half-hipped roof. Inside, the dining areas are arranged to accommodate both smaller tables and larger groups.
The building was put up in 1906 by master builder Otto Mallaun, originally as a sports house, and began welcoming guests as an inn the following year. This origin ties it to a moment when lakeside leisure culture was gaining ground in the region.
The terrace facing the lake is where locals and visitors tend to gather on warm days, giving the place a relaxed, everyday character. Sitting there, you get a clear sense of how people in Bregenz relate to the waterfront as part of daily life.
The restaurant is easy to reach on foot from central Bregenz and sits right along the waterfront path. During summer weekends and festival periods, the terrace fills up quickly, so booking ahead is a good idea.
A fire in 2004 destroyed the east section of the building entirely, yet the reconstruction was completed in just three months. Despite the speed of the rebuild, the exterior was kept very close to how it looked when first built in 1906.
