Mauterndorf Castle, Medieval history museum in Mauterndorf, Austria.
The castle rises at 1,138 meters altitude with a defensive tower and contains exhibits about regional life through multiple centuries in its halls and chambers.
Constructed in the 13th century as a toll station by order of the Salzburg cathedral chapter, the fortress expanded during the 15th century under Archbishop Leonhard von Keutschach.
The Lungau Regional Museum, established in 2007 within the castle walls, presents exhibitions about local traditions and the daily life of past inhabitants.
The castle opens from December through March between 10:00 and 18:00, with adult admission at 8 euros and children aged 6-15 paying 3.30 euros.
Visitors participate in guided discovery tours where museum educators share stories about the ancient toll station and meet actors portraying the Prince Archbishop.
