Ankazomivady Nature Reserve, Nature reserve in Ambositra, Madagascar
Ankazomivady Nature Reserve is a small forested area in the highlands of Ambositra, in the center of Madagascar. The trees grow tall and close together, the ground is covered with grass and fallen leaves, and the air stays cool and humid throughout the day.
The forests around Ambositra have been protected by local communities for generations, who saw living alongside nature as essential. Over time, a road built through the forest split it into two separate sections, changing the way wildlife moves through the area.
Local communities have long gathered medicinal plants from the forest, walking quietly along its narrow paths. Visitors today can hear guides share stories about the forest and its animals, reflecting a deep connection between the people and this land.
The trails through the forest are easy to walk and suitable for most visitors, with no steep or technical sections. Morning and late afternoon are the best times to spot wildlife, as animals tend to be most active during these hours.
The reserve is one of the few places in Madagascar where you can see the Malagasy peregrine falcon, a bird that is rarely spotted elsewhere on the island. Night walks are also possible here, giving visitors a chance to see frogs and small nocturnal mammals that stay hidden during the day.
