Night Market, Night market along Sisavangvong Road, Luang Prabang, Laos
The night market spans several blocks with over 250 vendors displaying textiles, ceramics, paintings, antiques, and handcrafted products beneath red canopies. Most stalls follow a similar layout, with goods arranged on shelves and tables that allow shoppers to move easily between rows.
The market was established in December 2002 and began without electricity, with vendors and shoppers working by candlelight. This led locals to originally call it the candle market before it became known by its current name.
Local women artisans display handwoven fabrics with traditional patterns that have been passed down by Hmong and other ethnic communities. Visitors can observe how these weaving techniques remain alive today and are reflected in the products sold.
The market opens daily in the early evening and stays open late, with vendors primarily accepting cash in Lao Kip. Visitors should wear comfortable shoes since the ground is uneven and it can get crowded, especially during peak hours.
Some merchants sell items made from recycled materials, including cutlery crafted from old wartime metals. These pieces are often paired with decorative elephant designs on woven bags and other handcraft products.
