Erawan Waterfall, Tourist attraction in Si Sawat District, Thailand

Erawan Waterfall is a seven-tiered cascade inside Erawan National Park, located in Si Sawat District, Kanchanaburi Province, Thailand. Each tier forms its own pool, and the water ranges from turquoise to pale green depending on depth and light.

Erawan National Park was established in the mid-1970s to protect the forest and waterways around the cascades. Before that, local communities considered the site sacred and believed the water held special properties.

The name Erawan comes from Hindu mythology and refers to a three-headed elephant that holds a special place in local tradition. The shape of the top waterfall is said to resemble the three trunks of this creature, something visitors notice when they reach the upper tiers.

Starting early in the morning gives you more space at the lower pools, which fill up quickly as the day goes on. Proper shoes are a good idea, since the trail gets steeper and rockier past the fifth tier.

The pools at Erawan Waterfall are home to small fish that naturally nibble at the dead skin on swimmers' feet, which catches many visitors off guard. This happens without any encouragement from the park, and is simply part of the local aquatic life.
