Gräberntunnel, Highway tunnel in Carinthia, Austria
Gräberntunnel is a highway structure beneath Gräbern village in Carinthia and consists of two parallel tubes running side by side. Each tube measures about 2100 meters and serves as a vital part of the A2 motorway.
The first tube opened in 1986 as part of a newly built motorway connection between Bad St. Leonhard and Wolfsberg. A second tube was added in 2001 in response to stricter safety rules following a major tunnel fire incident years earlier.
The tunnel is part of Austria's main north-south transport route and shapes daily life in the region through transit traffic. The infrastructure allows travelers and freight to pass through Carinthia's alpine areas without disrupting the village above.
Drivers need a valid motorway vignette to use the highway and pass through the tunnel. During peak times or bad weather, expect potentially slower transit times through the structure.
The eastern tube underwent major renovation immediately after the second tube was completed and finished the work ahead of schedule. This quick modernization was part of a broader safety upgrade program for Austrian tunnels.
