Main Square, Medieval market square in Kraków, Poland
The Main Square spans 200 meters on each side, forming a perfect quadrilateral space with surrounding historic townhouses and Gothic architecture at its edges.
After receiving Magdeburg rights in 1257, Kraków established this central marketplace where eleven major streets converged, creating a vital trading hub for merchants.
The square contains notable monuments including St. Mary's Basilica, the Cloth Hall, and the Town Hall Tower, which represent different architectural periods from Gothic to Renaissance.
Visitors can explore underground exhibitions beneath the square, which display archaeological findings and multimedia presentations about medieval trade in Kraków.
During World War II, German occupiers renamed this space 'Adolf Hitler Platz', but the original name returned immediately after liberation in 1945.
