Krzysztofory Palace is a Baroque building on the western side of Main Market Square that combines three earlier Gothic houses into its structure. The building shows the city's architectural evolution, as older elements are mixed with later Baroque details.
The building took shape between 1640 and 1649 under Crown Court Marshal Adam Kazanowski, who commissioned the transformation of the older houses into a unified structure. This work made the palace an important example of Baroque architecture in Krakow.
The palace houses the Museum of Krakow, where visitors can discover objects from different periods that tell the story of the city. The exhibition shows how life in Krakow changed throughout the centuries.
The building sits centrally in the Market Square and is easy to reach on foot, while the interior spaces are well signposted and simple to navigate. It makes sense to allow enough time to explore the exhibitions at a comfortable pace.
The interior spaces feature elaborate stucco work created by Italian architect Baldassare Fontana that demonstrates 17th-century craftsmanship. These finely detailed decorations remain visible today and show Italian influence on the architecture of that time.
