Merkinės apžvalgos bokštas
The Merkinė Observation Tower is a simple metal and concrete structure standing about 26 meters high on a hill in the small Lithuanian town. From the platform at the top, you can see 360 degrees across the Nemunas Landscape Reserve, the rivers where the Nemunas and Merkys meet, and dense forests stretching to the horizon.
The tower was built several decades ago to provide the region with a better viewing point and to make the area more attractive to visitors. Since its construction, it has remained a stable part of the local infrastructure and is regularly maintained and cared for.
The tower has become a gathering place where locals and visitors come to experience the landscape together. On clear days, families and walkers can be seen enjoying the view from above, taking time to appreciate the rivers and forests spread across the region.
The tower is easily accessible with a paved path suitable for families and most visitors. Sturdy footwear is recommended, and it is best to visit in good weather when the view extends farthest and the experience is most enjoyable.
On clear days, you can spot Pastraujas Island in the river from the platform, a small piece of land that looks especially beautiful when the water is calm. An audio guide at the tower explains what you see and shares stories about the region's long past, from old royal hunting traditions to the present day.
