Church of the Assumption, Merkinė

The church structure combines Gothic elements such as pointed-arch windows and three-tier buttresses with Baroque features including decorated pilasters and volutes on the pediment.

Founded in the late 14th century by Władysław II Jagiełło, the church underwent major renovations in the mid-17th century when Baroque elements were incorporated into its design.

The interior contains five wooden altars from different periods between the 17th and 19th centuries, representing the evolution of religious art in Lithuania.

Located at Liepų Street 9, the church maintains regular services and welcomes visitors to explore its architectural features and historical significance throughout the week.

The church stands as the only remaining religious building from the 17th-18th centuries when Merkinė contained four churches during its period of prominence.
