Liškiava hillfort

Liškiava hillfort is an elevated defensive structure that rises above the surrounding landscape and offers views toward the river and forests. The archaeological site shows traces from different periods with remains indicating long-term human use of the location.

The fort developed during the Middle Ages as a defensive installation for the local population and to monitor the region. However, human activity at the location extends back much further, with evidence of occupation spanning several millennia.

The site shows how medieval Baltic communities organized their defenses and protected their settlements from threats. Raised positions like this allowed people to monitor trade routes and control important river passages.

The site is reachable on foot and sits on elevated ground with some steep paths, so sturdy shoes are recommended. The best conditions for exploring happen during dry weather when the paths are much easier to walk.

Excavations have revealed that people used this location as far back as the Bronze Age, long before the medieval fort was built. These early traces show the elevated position held value for humans across thousands of years.
