Grūtas Park, Soviet sculpture garden in Druskininkai, Lithuania.
Grūtas Park is a sculpture garden and museum in Druskininkai, Lithuania, displaying more than eighty Soviet-era monuments in bronze and granite. The statues stand among pine trees across a sprawling site with paths that wind through forest and open clearings.
After Lithuanian independence in nineteen ninety-one, these statues were removed from public squares and collected by a businessman. The park opened in two thousand and one as a place to preserve these objects and document their meaning.
The outdoor exhibition includes sculptures of Lenin, Stalin, and Lithuanian communist officials, representing the complex relationship between Lithuania and its Soviet past.
The park is open year-round, with longer hours in summer and shorter hours in winter. Guided tours are offered regularly and help explain the historical context of the displayed objects.
A Soviet-style cafeteria serves dishes based on old recipes and preserves the atmosphere of the era. Railroad cars on the grounds recall deportations and can be viewed from inside.
