Juniper Valley, Protected nature reserve in Taurakiemis, Lithuania
Juniper Valley covers approximately 12 acres (5 hectares) and features naturally growing common juniper bushes that blanket the hillside slopes near the Kaunas Reservoir in the Kaunas District.
The juniper population once covered about 22 acres (9 hectares) a century ago, but half of the valley was submerged when the Nemunas River dam was constructed in 1958.
The common juniper holds significance in Lithuanian traditional medicine and folklore, with the plants releasing natural antiseptic compounds that locals have historically valued for their purported healing properties.
A marked trail measuring approximately 0.8 miles (1.3 kilometers) leads visitors through the reserve, featuring wooden walkways, observation platforms, and informational signs to enhance the experience of exploring the area.
The air in Juniper Valley contains exceptionally high concentrations of phytoncides released by the juniper plants, which are believed to have natural disinfecting properties and contribute to respiratory health.
