Raketenbasis Gulbiniškiai, Ehemaliger Raketenstartplatz in Litauen
Raketenbasis Gulbiniškiai is a former Soviet military installation built in the early 1960s in a forest near the village of Gulbiniškiai, about 7 kilometers southwest of Jonavos city. The site contains large concrete storage bunkers, launch platforms, administrative buildings, and barracks spread across the grounds, with most structures now abandoned and slowly deteriorating.
Construction began around 1959-1960 as part of Soviet nuclear deterrence efforts, and the base housed intercontinental ballistic missiles capable of reaching European targets. The installation was decommissioned decades ago and has remained largely unused since, becoming a remnant of Cold War military presence in Lithuania.
The base reflects how Cold War military sites were hidden away from civilian view and built in remote, forested areas to avoid detection. The remaining concrete structures and empty grounds show the scale and functionality of Soviet military operations, offering a visible glimpse into how such installations were organized and what they once meant to national defense strategies.
The site is accessible for walking, though visitors should stay on marked paths as some buildings may be unstable or unsafe to enter. The surrounding forest and open spaces make it easy to explore, and the best time to visit is during daylight hours when you can see the structures clearly and navigate the grounds safely.
The base covers 148 hectares and once contained over one hundred individual buildings and structures, making it one of the largest Soviet missile installations in the region. Few visitors realize that the site's remote forest location was deliberately chosen for strategic concealment, which is why the surrounding landscape today feels so quiet and removed from modern activity.
