Treet, building in Bergen municipality, Norway
Treet is a 14-story residential building in Bergen containing 62 apartments and made primarily from wood. The structure uses glued laminated timber for its frame, combined with steel connections, concrete foundations, and glass and metal cladding on the exterior.
Construction began in 2014 and finished in 2015, making it one of the first tall buildings globally to use engineered timber at significant scale. The project builds on Norway's long tradition of wooden construction and represents a shift toward sustainable modern building practices.
The name Treet means The Tree in Norwegian, reflecting the building's connection to nature. The wooden surfaces and overall design embody local values of sustainability and respect for natural materials that residents experience daily.
Access is available through the building's U-shaped form, which provides multiple entry points. Visitors should note that due to its height and Bergen's coastal location, the structure experiences strong winds and heavy rain, so weather-appropriate clothing is advisable when exploring the surrounding area.
The building was assembled from prefabricated modules transported by ship to allow larger modules than permitted on Norwegian roads. This innovative construction method significantly reduced building time and enabled a more efficient assembly system on site.
