Klettersteig Millnatzenklamm, Via ferrata in Lesachtal, Austria
The Klettersteig Millnatzenklamm is a secured climbing route extending approximately 919 feet (280 meters) through a narrow gorge along the Millnatzenbach stream, featuring steel cables, ladders, and suspension bridges over four waterfalls with difficulty ratings ranging from B to C.
This via ferrata was constructed in 2011 by Simon Wurzer from go-vertical.at on behalf of the Liesing Tourism Association, designed to provide an accessible introduction to secured climbing routes while highlighting the natural geology formed by glacial movements and water erosion over thousands of years.
The route reflects the Austrian tradition of making alpine terrain accessible through engineered climbing paths, combining technical sport climbing with family-friendly outdoor recreation in the Gailtaler Alps, attracting more than 18,000 visitors annually who seek adventure in the Lesachtal region.
Climbers must wear complete via ferrata safety equipment including helmet, harness, and gloves, and should avoid the route during rain, high water, or snowmelt due to slippery conditions and increased danger from flooding and debris in the stream below.
The route features six distinct sections with multiple steel suspension bridges crossing directly over rushing waterfalls, with some passages positioned just 2.5 feet (0.75 meters) above the water surface, creating an exhilarating combination of technical climbing and water spray from cascading falls.
