Lance's Right, surfing Break in Mentawaii Islands, Indonesia
Lance's Right, also known as HT's, is a surf spot on Sipora Island in the Mentawai Islands featuring fast, powerful waves that create long, hollow barrels. The wave breaks across several sections including the Office reef and the Main Peak, with channels between them offering different surfing options depending on the swell.
The spot was discovered on March 12, 1991 by Martin Daly and a crew aboard the MV Indies Trader who were exploring uncharted waves in the Mentawai Islands. They named the wave after Lance Knight, an Australian surfer who was already riding the wave alone when the explorers arrived.
The break is named after Lance Knight, an Australian surfer who rode the wave in the early 1990s, and the name was kept out of respect for him. A local name, Hollow Trees, refers to a hollowed-out tree that washed onto the reef after a large swell and became the landmark that inspired the place's alternative name.
The spot is best accessed during mid to high tide, with swells between 6 and 8 feet and westerly winds providing optimal conditions. Visitors can paddle from nearby beaches or arrive by boat from other parts of the Mentawai Islands and stay at local resorts or camps in Katiet.
The spot features a unique hazard called The Surgeon's Table, an extremely shallow reef section that becomes dangerous at low tide and can cause injury during wipeouts. Despite this challenge, the technical difficulty and potential for exceptionally long barrel rides attract experienced surfers from around the world.
