Lance's Right, surfing Break in Mentawaii Islands, Indonesia
Lance's Right, also known as HT's, is a surf spot on Sipora Island in the Mentawai Islands, Indonesia, known for fast, hollow waves that form long barrel sections. The reef breaks across several distinct sections, including the Office Reef and the Main Peak, separated by channels that offer different conditions depending on the swell direction.
The spot was discovered on March 12, 1991 by Martin Daly and his crew aboard the MV Indies Trader while exploring unmapped waves in the Mentawai Islands. When they arrived, Lance Knight, an Australian surfer, was already riding the wave alone, and the crew named it after him.
The wave is named after Lance Knight, an Australian surfer who was already riding it alone when an exploration crew first arrived, and the name was kept as a mark of respect. The alternative name, Hollow Trees, comes from a hollowed-out tree trunk that washed onto the reef after a large swell and became a local landmark.
The spot works best at mid to high tide, and surfers should be aware of the shallow reef section known as The Surgeon's Table, which becomes more exposed at low tide. Access is by boat from nearby beaches or from other parts of the Mentawai Islands, with accommodation available in camps and resorts around Katiet.
The section called The Surgeon's Table is an exceptionally shallow part of the reef that can cause serious injuries during wipeouts, and it is considered one of the most hazardous points along this break. What makes it stand out is that surfers keep coming back precisely because of the rare chance to ride some of the longest consistent barrels found anywhere in the world.
