Nordsøen Oceanarium
Nordsøen Oceanarium is a large public aquarium in Hjørring Kommune located near the harbor in Hirtshals that introduces visitors to underwater life. The facility features expansive tanks with various fish species, sharks, and rays, along with outdoor areas containing feeding pools and playgrounds.
The aquarium was founded many years ago and was originally known as the North Sea Museum. In the late 1990s, it expanded significantly with the addition of a major water tank that shaped its current form.
The name refers to the North Sea and its importance to Danish coastal life. Visitors encounter the sea creatures that inhabit these waters and understand their role in the ocean ecosystem.
The facility welcomes visitors year-round, with flexible options including single tickets or annual passes for repeat visits. The aquarium operates cafes serving local food, and visitors may also bring their own meals to designated picnic areas.
In summer 2021, a harbor seal named Maria gave birth to her pup in front of visitors, a rare moment people could witness live. Those present watched the mother caring for and feeding her offspring, offering insight into natural seal behavior.
