Nissum Fjord Nature Park, Nature park in Vemb, Denmark
Parc naturel de Nissum Fjord, also known as Naturpark Nissum Fjord, is a nature park in western Denmark centered on a large, shallow fjord near the village of Vemb. The land around it is mostly flat, with open meadows, reed beds, sandy dunes, and patches of forest that alternate as you move through the area.
The land around Nissum Fjord has been used for fishing and farming for centuries, and the waterway once played a central role in the life of nearby villages before modern roads arrived. The area was officially designated a nature park in 2018, giving the protection of its landscapes and wildlife a formal footing.
Every winter, tens of thousands of geese and ducks gather along the fjord, and watching these large flocks from the shore is a shared experience for many visitors. Small harbors dotted around the water offer benches and shelters where people stop for a picnic or simply sit and watch the water go by.
The park has well-marked trails for walking and cycling, and parking is available near the main access points around the fjord. Weather along this part of the Danish west coast can change quickly, so waterproof clothing and sturdy shoes are worth bringing no matter the season.
The park is home to the bittern, a rare bird that almost never shows itself but produces a deep, hollow call that sounds like blowing across the top of a glass bottle. Beavers also live here, and their dams and gnawed tree trunks along the streams are easy to spot if you walk slowly and look carefully.
