Zărnești Cliffs, Natural gorge in Zărnești, Romania

Zărnești Cliffs are a natural formation of vertical limestone walls located near the town of Zărnești in Romania, at the foot of the Piatra Craiului massif. The walls form a narrow gorge with a trail that starts near a spring called the Botorog Fountain and passes by several marked points along the way.

The gorge and its rock walls were used for generations by surrounding villages, as the springs along the trail provided a reliable source of water. The area was later incorporated into the Piatra Craiului National Park, which now oversees the protection of its natural features.

The cliffs of Zărnești have become a regular spot for climbers who come to tackle the steep rock faces. Beyond climbing, many people use the trails simply to walk or watch birds that nest in the cracks of the rock walls.

The trail starts in the town of Zărnești and is marked with signs that guide you toward the rock walls. Sturdy shoes are recommended since the ground can be uneven in places, and it is worth bringing enough water as the route climbs gradually.

Along the gorge there is a spring called the Gentlemen Fountain, which has been used by hikers and villagers for generations and still flows today. Despite being close to the town, bears are occasionally spotted in the area, so making noise while walking or going in a group is a practical habit here.
