Pinkas Synagogue, Renaissance synagogue in Josefov, Prague, Czech Republic
The Pinkas Synagogue features stone traceries across five windows and reinforced walls with supporting pillars beneath an intersecting ribbed vault ceiling.
Built in 1535 by Aaron Meshullam Horowitz, the synagogue stands between his former residence and the Old Jewish Cemetery as a testament to Jewish presence.
The synagogue walls display 77,000 handwritten names of Czech and Moravian Jewish victims who perished during the Nazi persecution in World War II.
The synagogue received 640,800 visitors in 2019 and requires a combined ticket with the Jewish Museum for access to other Jewish heritage sites.
The synagogue houses an exhibition of drawings created by children from the Terezin concentration camp, with over 4,000 original artworks in storage.
