Kirche Maria Schnee, Gothic monastery in Dolní Dvořiště, Czech Republic.
The pilgrimage church Maria Schnee stands on the Großer Zwickelberg near Svatý Kámen, southeast of Rychnov nad Malší, close to the Austrian border. The Baroque church, completed in 1701, replaced an earlier chapel built in 1653 over a granite rock called the Stone Chair, whose backrest and footrest are still visible. A chapel was added over a miraculous spring in 1709.
This structure was established during the medieval period when religious communities built such sanctuaries throughout Bohemia. The Gothic style reflects the construction methods and artistic preferences that dominated the region during that era.
This place served as a pilgrimage destination for believers from the surrounding region seeking devotion to the Virgin Mary. The spiritual role it held for the local community remains visible in how the space is maintained and reverenced today.
The site is accessible to visitors who wish to view the architecture and artworks from inside the building. Plan to spend adequate time exploring the interior details and understanding the layout of the different spaces.
The rock beneath the church is called the Stone Chair: legend says the Virgin Mary rested here while fleeing and the granite yielded to her body, leaving a seat with backrest and footstool that visitors can still see on the Großer Zwickelberg.
