Cokato Temperance Hall, Historic clubhouse in Cokato Township, Minnesota, United States

Cokato Temperance Hall is a two-story wood frame building with a rectangular shape and a front vestibule entrance. The main floor contains a single large room with a stage, while a staircase in the northeast corner provides access to an unfinished upper level.

Finnish immigrants homesteaded the prairie north of Cokato in 1866, and on August 2, 1896, members of that dispersed community founded the Onnen Toivo Temperance Society. That same year they bought a quarter-acre lot at a rural crossroads for $30 and erected the clubhouse under Erick Kotila's leadership. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1976 under its full Finnish name, Cokaton P.R.S. Onnen Toivo Raittiusseura.

The society took its name Onnen Toivo, Finnish for "hope of happiness". Its stage hosted plays, skits, lectures and music by local and travelling performers, and from 1910 an athletic club offered gymnastics, boxing and wrestling. Box socials raised money for charity and let young people meet.

Tours of the hall and the other buildings of Finnish Pioneer Park are available by appointment, arranged through the Cokato Finnish American Historical Society. The society holds annual events at the park, including observances of Finnish holidays such as Juhannus and Pikkujoulu. The site is a rural crossroads in Cokato Township, so plan your own transport.

Members signed formal pledges to abstain from alcohol, and those who broke this commitment had to sign new abstinence agreements to regain entry. This strict system reflected the core mission of the organization at that time.
