Shortugai, Archaeological site near Amu River, Afghanistan.

The excavation area contains two distinct hills, each spanning two hectares, with one serving as an ancient settlement and another as a fortified structure.

Established around 2000 BC, this settlement marks the northernmost outpost of the Indus Valley Civilization, functioning as a vital trading post.

Excavated materials include square seals with animal designs, clay models of cattle with carts, and painted pottery reflecting Harappan cultural influence.

The location near water sources enabled inhabitants to develop an irrigation system, bringing water from Kokcha River for agricultural cultivation.

The discovery of flax seeds in plowed fields indicates dryland farming methods, while irrigation canals suggest advanced agricultural techniques from multiple civilizations.
