Lake Ohrid spans across two countries, containing a deep tectonic basin that formed over two million years ago with numerous endemic species.
The region developed as a cultural center from the 7th to 19th centuries, featuring archaeological remains from Bronze Age settlements through Medieval periods.
The area holds over 800 Byzantine-style icons from the 11th to 14th centuries, along with numerous churches displaying exceptional religious art.
Visitors can explore seven ancient basilicas within the old section of Ohrid, each containing preserved mosaic floors from early Christian periods.
Lake Ohrid maintains 200 species exclusive to its waters, including 17 fish species, algae, snails, and crustaceans found nowhere else on Earth.
