Casa de Mateo Pumacahua, cultural heritage site in Peru

Welcome to the Casa del Brigadier Mateo García Pumacahua, a beautiful colonial mansion located in the city of Cusco, Peru. This historic building has been declared a Monumento Histórico del Perú since 1972 and is also part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Historic Centre of Cusco since 1983. The Casa del Brigadier Mateo García Pumacahua is situated on the left side of Saphy Street, which follows the path of the channelized Saphy River. The construction of this two-story building dates back to the 17th century and features a stunning Renaissance-style façade. The upper floor originally had balconies with railings, but they were later replaced by wrought iron gates. The house boasts two courtyards, with the first one being a square cloister. Additionally, there is a private chapel within the building. During the final years of the colonial period, the Casa del Brigadier Mateo García Pumacahua was owned by the brigadier himself, who fought against Túpac Amaru II during the rebellion. He later participated in the Cuzco Rebellion alongside the Angulo brothers. In the early 20th century, the Peruvian government acquired the property, and it was used as a girls' school before becoming the current police station for Cusco. Visitors to the Casa del Brigadier Mateo García Pumacahua can admire the beautiful architecture and learn about the history of the building and its former owner. The house is open to the public and offers guided tours in Spanish. It is recommended that visitors wear comfortable shoes as there are stairs to climb. If you're interested in exploring more of Cusco's rich history, there are several other nearby attractions worth visiting. These include the Plaza de Armas, the Cathedral of Santo Domingo, and the Qorikancha Temple. The city also offers a wide range of restaurants, cafes, and shops where you can enjoy local cuisine and purchase souvenirs to remember your trip. Overall, the Casa del Brigadier Mateo García Pumacahua is a must-see destination for anyone interested in history and architecture. Its stunning façade, beautiful courtyards, and rich history make it a unique and fascinating attraction in Cusco.
