Manta, Pacific coastal port in Manabí Province, Ecuador
Manta is a Pacific Ocean port in Ecuador's Manabí Province, with several beaches such as El Murciélago and Santa Marianita along its coastline. The city combines residential neighborhoods with fishing harbors, industrial seafood processing facilities, and tourist areas along the waterfront.
The site began as a Manteño trading post and grew into an important colonial harbor for Pacific commerce. French scientist Charles Marie de La Condamine used the bay in 1735 during his geodetic expedition to measure the equator.
The name derives from the Manteño people, whose legacy remains visible in fishing techniques and coastal cuisine. The beach sections are used by surfers and families, while fishers push their boats into the water directly from the sand each morning.
The coastline stretches for several kilometers, allowing visitors to choose between quieter sections to the north and busier areas with restaurants in the center. An international airport sits on the city's edge and connects the region to the rest of the country.
The tuna processing facilities rank among the largest in South America, transforming fresh catches into packaged products within hours of unloading. The harbor zone sometimes offers views of industrial operations when fishing fleets return in the early morning.
