Chacana

The Chacana caldera measures 32 kilometers in length and reaches an elevation of 4,643 meters above sea level in the Ecuadorian mountains.

The caldera experienced three major eruptions during the past 240,000 years, with the most recent recorded activity occurring from fissures in 1773.

The surrounding region contains numerous indigenous settlements that have developed specific practices considering the presence of this large volcanic formation.

Visitors need permits and professional guides to explore the caldera area, which sits 30 kilometers from Quito, the capital city of Ecuador.

The structure represents one of the largest rhyolite centers in the Northern Andes, featuring both andesitic and rhyolitic volcanic characteristics.
