Falkland Islands

The territory encompasses 700 rocky islands and islets centered around two main islands, divided by the Falkland Sound.

The first permanent settlement began in 1764 under French leadership, before British forces took control of the territory in 1833.

The 2,800 inhabitants, known as Kelpers, maintain British traditions while adapting to life in the South Atlantic environment.

Squid fishing licenses and sheep farming generate substantial revenue, representing the main economic activities of the territory.

The territory hosts colonies of king penguins and remains the subject of an ongoing sovereignty dispute between Britain and Argentina.
