Pico Paraná

Pico Paraná, Granite mountain in Serra do Ibitiraque, Brazil

Pico Paraná is a granite mountain in Serra do Ibitiraque reaching 1,877 meters and stands as the highest point in southern Brazil. Steep rocky slopes are covered with thick forest vegetation throughout.

The first documented ascent took place in 1941 when German explorer Reinhard Maack reached the summit with companions. This expedition contributed significantly to scientific knowledge of the region.

Indigenous Tupi-Guarani peoples traditionally lived in connection with the surrounding mountains, using the landscape as their home long before Europeans arrived.

The trek to the summit takes at least six hours on marked trails starting from the base camp. Start early and be prepared for changing weather and challenging terrain.

During winter months, temperatures at the summit drop below minus 10 degrees Celsius, creating frost formations on the granite surfaces. This contrast with the tropical surroundings surprises many visitors.
