The modernist concrete building, designed by architect Affonso Eduardo Reidy, stands along Guanabara Bay with gardens by Roberto Burle Marx.
Founded in 1948 at Banco Boavista building, the museum moved to its current location in 1952 and survived a significant fire in 1978.
The museum collection includes 4,000 works from Gilberto Chateaubriand, featuring Brazilian artists like Tarsila do Amaral and Candido Portinari.
The museum welcomes visitors Tuesday through Friday from noon to 6 PM, and weekends and holidays from noon to 7 PM.
The institution houses three main structures: an exhibition block, an auditorium for presentations, and a school block for educational programs.
