Saint Helena, British island in South Atlantic Ocean, Saint Helena and Dependencies

Saint Helena rises from the ocean with volcanic cliffs reaching 818 meters at Diana's Peak, surrounded by subtropical waters and green highlands.

The Portuguese discovered the uninhabited island in 1502, and it became a vital British East India Company maritime station from 1658.

The island population combines British, African, Chinese and Indian heritage, forming distinct traditions and a specific English dialect.

The Saint Helena Airport connects the island with weekly flights from South Africa, while local taxis provide transportation across the territory.

Jonathan, a Seychelles giant tortoise residing at Plantation House since 1882, holds the record as the oldest living land animal.
