Isalo III Formation, Geological formation in Mahajanga Province, Madagascar
The Isalo III Formation is a geological layering across northwestern Madagascar made up of sandstone, marls, and carbonate rocks. These materials built up over millions of years in different environments and shape the landscape of the region today.
This formation developed during the Middle Jurassic period when these regions were ocean coasts and river deltas. Fossils of large dinosaurs and other creatures from that distant past remain preserved within the layers.
The formation influences local communities who incorporate the geological features into their traditional stories and land management practices.
Access to this formation takes planning since the area is remote and has little infrastructure. A knowledgeable guide on the ground helps you understand the geological features and move safely through the terrain.
The layers divide into two distinct subunits that each show different coastal and delta landscapes from one time period. The differences between them reveal how the environment shifted across millions of years.
