Addu Atoll, Ring-shaped coral atoll in Southern Maldives.
Addu Atoll is a ring-shaped coral formation in the southern Maldives made up of around 29 islands surrounded by barrier reefs. The islands connect to each other through bridges and natural water channels, forming an integrated landmass within the ocean.
During World War II, the British built a naval base on Gan island that later transformed into an international airport. This military presence left permanent marks on the atoll's infrastructure and its connection to the outside world.
The people here speak their own version of Dhivehi that sounds noticeably different from other atolls in the region. This dialect reflects a long history of living somewhat apart from the rest of the Maldives.
Getting between islands works through ferries, bridges, or scooter rentals depending on which islands you want to visit. You can stay anywhere from large resort properties to family-run guesthouses spread across the atoll.
White terns nest here and are found nowhere else in the Maldives in the same numbers or in this way. The islands also host frogs, land crabs, and bats living among tropical flowers and fruit trees.
