Raya Syekh Burhanuddin Mosque, Islamic mosque in Ulakan, Indonesia.
Raya Syekh Burhanuddin Mosque is a house of worship with two minarets rising from either side of the main structure. The building has a square layout measuring 40 meters across with a front terrace extending 3 meters.
This place was founded in 1670 as a simple wooden structure and became an important site of Islamic devotion under the guidance of religious leader Burhanuddin Ulakan. The small wooden building gradually developed into the larger complex that stands today.
The building blends Middle Eastern architectural details with traditional Minangkabau design patterns from West Sumatra. You can see this mix in the decorative elements and the sloped roof shape that reflects the local heritage.
The religious complex can accommodate up to 3,000 worshippers with large interior and outdoor spaces. As a local evacuation center during emergencies, visitors should note the signage and access routes.
After the 2009 earthquake caused major damage, the entire building had to be completely rebuilt from the ground up. It reopened in 2011 as a modern structure that still maintains its traditional character.
