Tuo Koto Nan Ampek Mosque

Tuo Koto Nan Ampek Mosque is a prayer house with three-tiered roofs designed to shed water effectively in tropical conditions. Wooden columns support the interior space, and an elevated floor system keeps the structure protected from moisture.

Construction of the mosque began in 1840 under the leadership of three tribal chiefs from the Kampai, Piliang, and Malayu communities in West Sumatra. The project emerged from the desire of these groups to create a shared space for prayer and gathering.

The mosque reflects traditional Minangkabau architecture and serves as a gathering place for the community beyond daily worship. People use the space for social connection and local ceremonies that bring together families and neighbors.

Visitors should remember this is an active prayer house, so the best time to explore is outside of prayer times. The location is easily reached on foot and access is typically open to respectful visitors.

What stands out is that many original wooden pillars, floors, and walls from 1840 still remain in place and support the structure. Only the original fiber roof was replaced with metal materials over time to better withstand the weather.
